Day Trip from Dublin February 25, 2012

So in thinking about this trip, Loren enlightened me to the concept of travel videos!  She said she often rents them before international trips.  Hmm, I thought to myself…where does one rent a travel video these days?  Duh, said Loren.  Check them out from the library!  So I checked a bunch of them out (and am still waiting on one, actually) and we watched two of them together.  One was kind of weird…but we are now well-versed in the fancy cheese-making trade and organic farming.  What?  Exactly.

But the other video we watched was good.  It was a Rick Steves video, so it gave us a lot of good insight.  Like, we will definitely be renting a car!  One idea we got from the video was to take a day trip an hour north of Dublin.  There we would find Brú na Bóinne, which is is a World Heritage Site   Brú na Bóinne sits in the Boyne Valley and is comprised of three Celtic passage tombs: Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth.  These passage tombs predate Stonehenge and the Pyramids.  As Loren said, good thing because we don’t get out of bed for anything younger than the Pyramids!

I’ve learned a lot about these passage tombs…when you consider they were constructed 5000 BC, it’s pretty stunning.  I can’t wait to see them and learn more about them!!

In addition to these sites, just west of here, sits the Hill of Tara.  This was the most holy site amongst the Celts, as they say you can see 20% of Ireland from atop the hill.  This is where the Celtic rulers/kings ruled from and where they watched the Vikings and other intruders storm their land and eventually take over.

Also interesting about the Hill of Tara…the Irish want to construct a motorway near Tara and that has caused much uproar.  There was a Campaign to Save Tara.  People like my boyfriend, Jonathan Rhys Myers even came out in support of it at a rally.

That’s a terrible photo of him…and we’re just pretending that chick isn’t there.  But you can see that his shirt says the Campaign to Save Tara.  Maybe he’ll just be hanging out there when we go????  Well, according to this video, probably not.  But I can hope, right?
